Tableau's natural-language SQL is Ask Data / Tableau Pulse. Every DataAgent entry above describes the local-first desktop app: your warehouse stays on your machine, and the app ships no telemetry.
What sets DataAgent apart
Local-first & Private
The desktop app runs entirely on your machine with Ollama, and your warehouse is a local DuckDB file — it never touches our servers. Zero API costs with local LLMs like Qwen 2.5 and LLaMA 3. Only a question you send to a cloud provider ever leaves the machine — see the network disclosure.
Real Power BI Interop
DataAgent exports a real .pbix with your data — a star schema and DAX measures, not an empty template — and it also imports existing .pbix/.pbit files and rebuilds them locally. Build here, open in Power BI Desktop, full layout and theme preservation.
Free tier & open source
The core app is open source under AGPL-3.0 and the free tier covers the core workflow — upload, ask questions, chat, SQL, dashboards — with a daily AI-request cap. A one-time Lifetime licence (₹10,000) or a monthly Pro plan unlocks Power BI export, Dashboard Studio, automation, data catalog, org structure and enterprise controls. Self-host it with Docker and there is no checkout and no licence fee — the account keeps the free tier's allowances, and an administrator on the instance can grant a paid plan to a local account (POST /subscriptions/{user_id}).
TL;DR — When to use DataAgent
Choose DataAgent when you need AI-powered analytics with data privacy, Power BI interop, enterprise security, and a self-hosted free tier no vendor can switch off under you. Choose Power BI when you're already in the Microsoft ecosystem and need enterprise governance at scale. Choose Tableau for advanced visual analytics with large teams and complex data models. Choose Metabase/Superset for open-source BI with SQL-first workflows. Choose ChatGPT/Julius for quick one-off analyses — but you'll pay per month and lose control of your data.
